Blue Square Bet Premier side Southport's first-team coach Pablo Asensio has applied for the vacant manager's post at Accrington.

The Argentine worked at the Crown Ground in the 2008/09 season under John Coleman, who ended a 13-year association with Stanley when he moved to Rochdale last month.

"Yes, I have applied," said Asensio in the Lancashire Telegraph.

"I received an email from (chief executive) Rob Heys to say thank you for your application and that the club will be in contact shortly. I think it was a polite email.

"I worked as a coach with John Coleman and I enjoyed it there."

Experienced defender Leam Richardson is currently heading up an interim management for the League Two outfit, assisted by veteran midfielder Bryan Hughes and head of youth Phil Hackney.
