LIVERPOOL

BRAD JONES: As third-choice goalkeeper the Australian coped well with little he had to do. No chance for the goal but did everything that was asked of him. 6

GLEN JOHNSON: Was unable to attack as much as he would have liked and struggled to establish any link-up with Jordan Henderson in front of him. Got better after the break. 6

MARTIN SKRTEL: Provided some reliability and stability at the back and was Liverpool's best defender all afternoon. Rarely flustered. 7

JAMIE CARRAGHER: Failure to take responsibility at the back, which was what he was included for, proved fatal as his delay and poor clearance led to Everton's goal. 5

DANIEL AGGER: Whether playing in an unfavoured left-back slot contributed to the misunderstanding for the goal is debatable. Did not get forward with any threat until the second half. 6

JAY SPEARING: Missed chanced to test Tim Howard early on after finding himself in an advanced position. Often found himself ahead of Gerrard but performed his defensive duties well. 6

STEVEN GERRARD: Did not get forward as much as he liked and was often crowded out and forced deeper by Everton's hard-working midfield. Orchestrated second-half improvement. 7

JORDAN HENDERSON: Found the game passing him by too often in the first half but oddly improved slightly when switching flanks to the left. Replaced by Maxi Rodriguez. 5

STEWART DOWNING: Whipped in a couple of dangerous crosses in the first half but rarely had a run at Phil Neville despite having the beating of him for pace. 5

ANDY CARROLL: In aerial battles he found his match in Sylvain Distin but could have done more in front of goal, heading wide from close range early in second half. Overall performance improved after the break and winner will have boosted his confidence. 7

LUIS SUAREZ: Spent much of the first half either running into offside positions or tangling with John Heitinga. Took his goal brilliantly after being gifted a backpass and his constant running was a threat to Everton. 7

Substitutes

MAXI RODRIGUEZ (on for Henderson, 75): Hit the post from close range, which would have wrapped up the result, but provided a calmness to midfield. 5

CRAIG BELLAMY (on for Downing, 84): Inswinging free-kick set up the winning goal just two minutes after coming on. 5

EVERTON

TIM HOWARD: Alert to any Liverpool threat but surprisingly under-employed in the first-half. 7.

LEIGHTON BAINES: Usual threat at dead-ball situations and diligent defensively as Everton chose to play on the counter-attack. 7.

DARRON GIBSON: Solid display from former Manchester United man, playing with the relish of someone trusted to do a job. 7.

JOHN HEITINGA: Struck up a useful partnership with Sylvain Distin that faltered only once, to decisive consequences. 7.

NIKICA JELAVIC: What a signing he has proved to be. Pounced like the predator he is to put Everton in front. 8.

SYLVAIN DISTIN: Composed presence at the heart of the Toffees' defence throughout the first half but undid all that good work by gifting Luis Suarez the equaliser. 4.

TIM CAHILL: So often grabs the goalscoring glory but now playing second fiddle and willing to do the hard yards. 7.

PHIL NEVILLE: Used all those years to help keep Liverpool at bay. Got a let-off when Carroll missed. 6.

MAGAYE GUEYE: Another of those unsung heroes who rarely catches the eye but sticks to his job no matter how unrewarding. 7.

LEON OSMAN: Has been talked of as a potential England international and easy to see why. Switched wings midway through the second half and brought a decent save out of Brad Jones. 7.

MAROUANE FELLAINI: Always gives the impression of playing within himself, even here. Priceless contribution though. 7.

Substitutes:

SEAMUS COLEMAN (on for Gueye, 67): Introduced soon after Liverpool's equaliser to offer another attacking option. Slip near own box almost proved costly though and might have had a red later on. 5.

VICTOR ANICHEBE (on for Baines, 88): Not enough time to make an impression.
