TEAMtalk rates and slates the individual performances after Manchester City leapfrogged United with a 1-0 derby win at the Etihad Stadium.
MANCHESTER CITY
Joe Hart: Barely a save to make for England's number one, but surprised by one Nani effort early in the second half. 6
Pablo Zabaleta: Wonderfully energetic showing as he justified selection ahead of Micah Richards. Solid defensively and overlapped tirelessly when United sat deep. 8
Vincent Kompany: Evaded his marker with ease and cashed in fully with his headed goal on the stroke of half-time. Shackled Wayne Rooney and remained level-headed after an early booking. 9
Joleon Lescott: Made a smart early interception as Nani looked to break and was entirely composed throughout. 7
Gael Clichy: Began busily on the left and settled for a more reserved role after City took the lead. One eye-catching run and almost scored late on. 8
Gareth Barry: Not usually one of City's standouts but gave an extremely efficient and solid performance. Offered City a safe option in midfield and stopped United getting at the City back four. 8
Yaya Toure: Not his usual force of nature in the first half due to an over-populated midfield area but stronger as the game went on and could have scored a couple of times in the closing stages. 8
David Silva: Started brightly, with neat touches and attacking intent but faded out and did not see the end. 6
Carlos Tevez: One muscular surge through the middle of the park aside, the Argentinean never looked like making the headlines many anticipated. 6
Samir Nasri: Probably the best player on the pitch in the first half, dribbling well and unnerving United's defenders when he carried the ball. Required less as City sat on their lead. Should have scored late on. 8
Sergio Aguero: A curious performance from the Argentina striker. Always available as an outlet up front and occupied United's centre-halves but always seemed one good touch away from scoring and had several chances to. 6
Substitutes:
Nigel de Jong (for Tevez, 68): A wise introduction as he battled to retain the lead. 7
Micah Richards (for Silva, 82): Brought on to bolster the defensive effort. 6
James Milner (for Nasri, 90): Token time-eating addition. (n/a)
MANCHESTER UNITED
David de Gea: No chance to keep out Kompany's bullet header and made a couple of decent stops when City poured forward in the latter stages. 6
Phil Jones: Cleared well from a dangerous Tevez cross in the first half but unusually awkward going forward. A last-gasp tackle on Nasri prevented a certain second for City. 6
Rio Ferdinand: Let down by Smalling for City's goal and otherwise enjoyed a straightforward game, giving Aguero little joy in the area. 7
Chris Smalling: Dependable in open play as he repelled cross after cross but culpable for slack marking for Kompany's decisive goal. 5
Patrice Evra: Skinned once by Nasri to no great effect but more worryingly his attacking forays now appear to be a thing of the past. Flat captain's performance. 6
Nani: Started brightly in both halves but fell away worryingly on each occasion. Did not provide the quality final ball United required of him. 5
Michael Carrick: Thought he might have had a penalty when he shot against Kompany's arm early on and put himself about well. One of his side's better players. 7
Park Ji-sung: A surprise inclusion as Sir Alex Ferguson attempted to swamp the midfield. An unsuccessful day in the middle was ended after 58 anonymous minutes. 5
Paul Scholes: Seemed to find some space in front of Gareth Barry in the opening exchanges but quickly slipped into the background. Not one of his better games. 5
Ryan Giggs: Belied his advanced years to cover plenty of ground and hassle City in the first-half stifling campaign. Decent dead-ball delivery but no magic. 6
Wayne Rooney: United's tactics were geared towards squeezing City out rather than helping their best player, who was forced to come deep and drift wide for a slice of the action. Always willing but frustrated by lack of support. 7
Substitutes:
Danny Welbeck (for Park, 58): Perhaps unlucky to be left out and struggled to get his partnership with Rooney into gear when he did arrive. 6
Antonio Valencia (for Scholes, 78): Did not produce any killer balls but did enough to suggest his width may have been an attractive option from the start. 6
Ashley Young (for Nani, 83): United's defeat was all but assured by the time the winger was thrown on and he could not change it. 5
