Bristol City's plans to build a new 30,000-seater stadium on the Ashton Vale site have been boosted after a judicial review was dropped.

A review was required after Bristol City Council decided not to fully ratify town green status for the site, but that has unexpectedly been dropped.

This means City, who will sell the current Ashton Gate land to supermarket giant Sainsbury's, can now continue with the development.

"We are delighted with the news. It seems common sense has prevailed," chairman Colin Sexstone told the club's official website.

"It is important to stress the club has only been, and remains, an interested third party in the matter. We await official confirmation from the court that the judicial review process has ended.

"The withdrawal of the judicial review brings a greater degree of certainty to our plans. We expect to make a considered decision in due course as to how and when we proceed with the stadium development."
