Mark McGhee criticised his Bristol Rovers' players after they were beaten 4-0 at Port Vale on Tuesday evening.
A hat-trick from Tom Pope, the top goalscorer in League Two, was the catalyst for the Valiants' victory as McGhee's men put in a hapless performance at Vale Park.
Ben Williamson was also on the scoresheet, leaving the Pirates' boss struggling to take any positives, with his team sat 21st in the table.
McGhee said: "Too many of my players let us down and didn't compete well enough, particularly early in the game.
"The forwards didn't work hard enough to keep the ball up the pitch and that had a knock-on effect on our midfield players and then our defenders.
"We allowed Vale to get behind us far too easily and it just wasn't good enough."
