Newport v Bury preview

Newport will be without Ismail Yakubu when they host Bury at Rodney Parade.

The former Barnet centre-back saw red in the dying seconds of their 2-0 loss at Exeter on Monday and he will now serve a one-match ban against the Shakers.

Regan Poole, 16, was handed a start against the Grecians and is set to keep his spot and may even more to the centre of defence if Ryan Jackson overcomes the muscle strain which has kept him out of their last two games.

Newport currently occupy the last play-off spot in League Two ahead of kick-off.

Bury could have a double boost with Jim McNulty and Danny Rose nearing a return.

Central defender McNulty has been struggling with a hip injury and striker Rose has been waylaid by a calf problem, but Shakers boss David Flitcroft has confirmed the pair are close to coming back into contention following a full week of training.

Full-back Joe Riley completes his three-game suspension and can return against Shrewsbury on Tuesday while centre-back Nathan Cameron needs to avoid getting a 10th caution of the season before Sunday’s yellow card amnesty.

Adam El-Abd played all 90 minutes on Easter Monday despite fears his knee problem could keep him out and both Daniel Nardiello (groin) and fellow striker Ryan Lowe (hamstring) are now considered fit enough to complete a whole game if required.

Newport should be boosted by the return of Ryan Jackson when they face Bury.

The former Macclesfield defender’s dead leg meant he missed just Newport’s second win in 15 matches on Saturday as they overcame Torquay 1-0 but he looks likely to return to the squad.

Darcy Blake and Kevin Feely, signed shortly before the trip to Plainmoor, both excelled and will hope to keep their places while striker Rene Howe, who missed their last two games for family reasons, could return to action.

Captain David Pipe serves the second of his two-match suspension for 10 yellow cards and sits this match out along with Ismail Yakubu, Byron Anthony, Jamie Stephens, Lenny Pidgeley and Andy Sandell.

Bury are likely to be without midfielder Tom Soares again when they visit Newport.

Soares came off against Torquay with a hamstring complaint and missed Saturday’s home draw with Dagenham as a result.

Shakers boss David Flitcroft revealed the problem was only minor but was exercising caution for fears he could be out for longer. The ex-Barnsley manager added there is an outside chance that Soares could play in Wales, although a comeback against either Exeter or Scunthorpe looks more likely.

Brian Jensen will continue in goal after reprising his role between the sticks against Dagenham. The veteran had been dropped for teenager Reice Charles-Cook but Flitcroft does not think he is ready for Sky Bet League Two football just yet.
