Boss saddened by Tranmere drop

Rovers were demoted out of League Two last Saturday when they lost at Plymouth while fellow strugglers Hartlepool defeated Exeter to end Tranmere’s 94-year Football League existence.

That means this weekend’s clash with Bury holds little significance for the home side – even if the automatic promotion -chasing visitors still have plenty left to play for.

And Flitcroft is glad it is not his men who will consign managerless Rovers into non-league football.

“I would take no enjoyment in that,” Flitcroft said.

“Tranmere have been a fantastic club and they’ve unearthed a lot of players. The plan there has obviously gone wrong.

“I’m gutted that a team like Tranmere have gone down. For me, there’s good people there, they are a fantastic club, the fans are passionate.

“It’s a very good football club that’s gone and it’s difficult to get back. You look at the likes of Luton and Wrexham – Wrexham don’t look like getting anywhere near out of that league.

“It’s massive trauma for Tranmere. I’m probably relieved a little bit on that it doesn’t hinge on us going down there and knocking them out of the league. I get no joy out of that.”

Bury are currently fourth in the fourth tier, two points behind third-placed Southend, who visit Morecambe during Sunday’s final round of fixtures.
