Paul Groves admits Bournemouth lacked fire-power against Oxford after his first match as Cherries boss ended with a Capital One Cup defeat.
Marc Pugh saw his penalty saved by U's goalkeeper Ryan Clarke, before Damien Batt's spot-kick knocked the visitors out of the competition.
Groves blamed the lack of an end product for the result, as Bournemouth failed to progress to the second round for the sixth time in seven seasons.
Groves said: "In the first 45 minutes they were better than us.
"You've got to work the goalkeeper more than we did. The cutting edge is where it matters and it wasn't there enough from us. Things broke down too many times."
