Carlisle boss Greg Abbott was left to rue his side's luck after going down 1-0 to League One play-off rivals Stevenage.
Substitute John Mousinho crashed home a superb winner off the underside of the crossbar 14 minutes from time after Boro goalkeeper Chris Day had excelled himself with a magnificent save from Danny Livesey.
The result puts Stevenage alongside the Blues, a single point behind sixth-placed Notts County with three games left of the season.
"They've scored from one of their only shots in the second half and their keeper has made a wonder save from Danny Livesey's header," said Abbott. "We've also had (Andy) Welsh have a great chance in front of goal but he's screwed it wide and that's the sort of things that you need to go for you at this stage of the season.
"It hurts when there's only one goal in it - it was always going to be a one-goal game I think - and we felt that we were good value for it.
"There's a disappointment that we haven't managed to get it but we've got to pick the boys up and go again because we've still got three massive games to go."
