Colchester manager John Ward could not hide his disappointment after watching his side crash 4-1 at lowly Bury on Monday.
Ward's side have now drawn seven and lost two of their last nine games and have slipped 12 points adrift of the League One play-offs.
David Worrall, Mike Grella, Giles Coke and Shaun Harrad were on target for the Shakers, while Tom Eastman pulled one back for the visitors.
After losing at Gigg Lane, Ward said: "We started the game really well, but we let our heads drop and after about 20 minutes we were just never in the game."
