TEAMtalk's Simon Wilkes looks at the Twitter reaction to Stuart Pearce's decision not to include David Beckham in his Team GB football squad.

Pearce's decision has divided opinion up and down the country, with some suggesting it is simply the former Manchester City manager trying to make a 'strong-man gesture' - and some saying Beckham deserves more respect, especially having played such a big role in luring the Games to London.

The news sparked a wave of reaction on Twitter, with the world and his wife having their say, and here Simon Wilkes sifts through the best tweets.

Henry Winter @henrywinter - Daily Telegraph writer

Pearce's logic founders on having included #Beckham in his provisional lists for Team GB. Becks deserved more respect.

Olympic football is a hybrid competition and Team GB an alien concept in modern football. Good luck selling those 1m spare tickets

Jake Humphrey @mrjakehumphrey - BBC presenter

Pretty shocked #Becks doesn't make 2012 line-up. I assumed having given so much in ambassadorial capacity he would be a default selection.

Strong message that its a selection about form/ability from Stuart Pearce & that an Olympic gold medals is worth more than sentiment...?

Gary Lineker @GaryLineker - BBC presenter

Terrible shame for Beckham having given so much to to the Olympic bid and football. Would love him on our BBC sport team for #London2012

There are arguments for and against DB selection. What I don't understand though, is why string him along by including him in a short list?

Ian Watson @ianwatson1 - TEAMtalk writer

Seeing many references to 'Beckham circus'. The Olympic football tournament is a circus for GB. We wouldn't even bother if it wasn't in UK.

Paul Hayward @_PaulHayward - Daily Telegraph writer

It looks as if Stuart Pearce wanted to make a strong-man gesture over Beckham. He had no divine right to be in GB squad but he had a case.

Beckham aside, don't think Stuart Pearce was best qualified for the GB job. And being discarded by England seniors may have affected him?

Nick Miller @NickMillerF365 - Football 365 writer

If you're surprised about Becksy, remember Pearce is a man who nearly picked a team without a GK, & appointed a Beanie Baby as his assistant.

Dave Tindall @DaveTindallgolf - Golf365 writer

Some saying Olympics a great way to blood new players and that's why no Beckham is good. Fair point. So we pick Giggs and Bellamy then!

Olympic football is only a laugh anyway. Who cares who wins? Who can recall past winners? Beckham would have generated more interest. End of

Joe Drabble @SkySportsDrabs - Sky Sports writer

No Beckham but a place for Bellamy. I thought the Olympics was all about role models.

Andrew McDermott @a_mcdermott - PA Sport writer

I can understand people being disappointed for Beckham but baffled that anyone thinks he's one of best three over-age players available.

Graeme Bailey @SkyGraemeBailey - Sky Sports writer

I would have taken Beckham, has done huge amount for London 2012 and does anyone really care if we win it or not? Harsh from Pearce.

Jon Holmes @jonboy79 - TEAMtalk writer

People implying that Beckham would be some sort of passenger if he'd been picked. I read his MLS form of late had been good.

Loads of newspaper journos backing Pearce I see. Think there were more positives than negatives on Becks involvement personally.

Oliver Kay þ@OliverKayTimes - The Times writer

No Beckham at Olympics? Sentimentally, harsh. Commercially questionable. But aren't "football reasons" what we want at squad selection time?

James Corden ‏@JKCorden - 'Smithy', Hammers fan

To ask David Beckham to give everything to winning the Olympics for London and then not picking him to take part is so disrespectful.
