Jon Green is delighted to see Gillingham in contention in League Two...but there is a long way to go yet!

Proof is in the position for Gillingham

It's certainly getting very interesting at the top end of the league two table and The Gills are definitely in the promotion mix with just sixteen games remaining!

Realistically both Chesterfield, who recently won at Priestfield and Wycombe are clear favourites for the top two positions bearing in mind they still have games in hand over us. However I must remind them it is a marathon and not a sprint as so many Football League managers claim!

After the fantastic victory over promotion rivals Rotherham Andy Hessenthaler's boys have proved once again they have more than enough to compete for a top three place.

Following draws against both Stevenage and Oxford it was vital the team claimed all three precious points against the Millers and they certainly deserved them. Once again the goal machine that is Cody McDonald stole the show with two more sublime finishers to move his tally to seventeen for the season.

He undoubtedly deserved the League Two Player of the month award for January. In fact they might as well present him with the player of the year award too if he continues in this rich vein of form!

Big Bayo Akinfenwa must also take a lot of credit for Codys recent form. He was immense against Rotherham who's two centre halves must have been glad to see the back of him! A special mention to Simon King as well - It was fantastic to see him back from that terrible lay off. It does prove that as a Footballer you are only one injury away from retirement from the game but Kingy has shown great courage to return and lets all hope he can carry on playing.

The next three fixtures for The Gills could well have a big deciding factor on where we end up in the final league table. First up is a trip to Gresty Road against a Crewe side who are always tough to play against. We follow that with games against fellow promotion hopefuls Bury and our old friends from Shrewsbury!

Up The Gills!
