Mason tipped to earn England place

admin

Back in September this would’ve been a ridiculous cry – and to some it may still be. However, with his solid, tenacious displays for Spurs, he could well be in Hodgson’s thinking for his next squad.

I’m not going to lie. I was one of those who had assumed that Mason would be sold to a Championship or League 1 team for a small fee, and then would play out his career there. It just goes to show what giving someone a go can do.

His performances since he came into the Spurs team have been good. Not very good or great, but good. He gets about the pitch, bites in the tackle and can pass pretty well. As we saw against Nottingham Forest, he can shoot too – although he’s yet to score in the Premier League and seems to lack a bit of composure when he has an opportunity in the box.

Paul Scholes is amongst the critics who have raised the possibility of him playing for England; and he knows a thing or two about playing in midfield.

Gone are the England days of Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard – now we have the more modest Fabian Delph and Jack Wilshere. These players have a lot more Premier League experience than Mason, but if he continues as is, there’s no reason why he can’t challenge the likes of these for an England squad place. And, frankly, if Jack Colback can be called up for a squad, so can Mason.

It does say a lot about the current England squad that someone can play half a season and then be ‘in contention’. If you cast your mind back to the start of the season, some were calling for Manchester United’s Tyler Blackett after just a few games!

Harry Kane is rightly getting lots of press attention and is a shoe-in for the next squad. And with Kyle Walker getting back to full fitness and Andros Townsend being a favourite of Hodgson’s, Spurs players could begin to feature more prominently in the England squad.

One of the things I like about Mason is that he doesn’t appear to be a respecter of reputations. We shall see in the coming games against Fiorentina and the League Cup final against Chelsea if he can perform in high pressure games. Let’s hope so.

Ryan Mason – he’s also one of our own.
