MoPo faces January transfer dilemma

admin

With the transfer window open, rumours are circling about the future of mis-firing Roberto Soldado. To paraphrase The Clash: Should he stay or should he go?

On the face of it, the easy call is to say we should try to get rid of Soldado. His scoring record is poor for a £2.6 million striker, let alone a £26 million one. He’s also missed some easy chances of late and has been given every opportunity to try to get some goals.

The big thing in his favour, though, is the fact that he works hard and does seem to have a genuine desire to make it work at Spurs. The passion he showed when he scored against Everton and the delight of his team mates was there for all to see – not every import into the Premier League is so popular with his team mates.

He’s also creating chances for others, as he displayed against Burnley in the FA Cup. Modern centre forward play isn’t all about goals; although you would expect Soldado to chip in with more.

Along with most Spurs fans, I think we’d be much better trying to offload Emmanuel Adebayor – but I’d be surprised if anyone wanted to take him off of our hands.

And then there’s the question of who to bring in? Someone like Christian Benteke would be ideal, but Aston Villa are unlikely to want to sell and I don’t think he warrants a mega-bid. Danny Ings is another who has been linked; but I think we’re better off seeing how he goes over the second half of the season and then if he does improve, to bid for him when his contract is up.

January transfers are often seen as huge gambles and buying and selling players may well be easy on Football Manager, but with huge wages, agent fees etc. it’s not so easy in the real football world. Spurs are going along reasonably well at the moment and a new star signing could interrupt things.

I’m sure Pochettino has his targets, but these always come at a huge premium in January and I suspect he may wait until the summer. To that end, I’d be surprised if Soldado – and Adebayor – were elsewhere come February.
