Germany goalkeeper Rene Adler feels he was impeded in the build-up to England's opening goal in Berlin on Wednesday.

England, who won 2-1 on the night, opened the scoring as Matthew Upson poked home after Adler failed to deal with a Stewart Downing corner.

But Adler believes his path was blocked by winger Shaun Wright-Phillips as he moved to intercept the cross.

"I have not seen the situation again, but I believe that it was a foul," Adler told ZDF . "Having said that, I am the last person to admit an error.

"I wanted to punch the ball with my left hand, but the opponent tangled with my arm.

"It does look unfortunate, but I would have blown up for it."

Helmes praise

Meanwhile, Patrick Helmes admitted England deserved their triumph despite the striker levelling on 63 minutes after a mix-up between captain John Terry and keeper Scott Carson.

"The defender and goalkeeper both switched off and I just stole in," Helmes explained. "I am happy to have scored my first international goal, but in the end, we have lost the game.

"England played really well, even though they had a few players missing. A 1-1 draw would certainly have flattered us."
