On The Bench
Gray, left out by Alan Pardew despite scoring the winner against at Doncaster in midweek, saw his close-range shot parried by Paul Smith in second-half stoppage time.
A point was of genuine relief to Forest, who were coming off the back of consecutive league defeats to Preston, Burnley and Wolves, and Carling Cup exit at the hands of Sunderland.
Colin Calderwood's men dominated an eventful first half, and the result could have been very different had Addicks goalkeeper Nicky Weaver not been alert to deny Forest top-scorer Robert Earnshaw, along with the lively Lee Martin.
But both sides grew increasingly frustrated as the game dragged on, and substitute Matt Thornhill was sent off with six minutes remaining for a second bookable offence.
Calderwood had recalled striker Nathan Tyson to play alongside Earnshaw in attack, in place of veteran frontman Andy Cole while Charlton preferred Grant Basey to Gray as a more defensive option.
Earnshaw was presented with a great opportunity to get Forest off to a flyer after just five minutes.
The pacy striker met Lee Martin's corner, but Weaver produced a splendid reaction save to deny the Welshman his sixth goal of the season.
Martin himself unleashed an effort four minutes later, but Weaver was again on hand to palm his effort to safety.
The Addicks did not find their range until 17 minutes into the half, when Mark Hudson saw his goalbound shot well blocked by Wes Morgan.
Luke Chambers was recalled to the Forest starting line-up in place of Ian Breckin and the young defender found himself in referee Karl Evans' notebook after 19 minutes for a foul on Hameur Bouazza.
Midway through the half, Weaver pulled off another save to deny Chris Cohen, but Earnshaw was ruled offside.
For all Forest's pressure, the visitors began to find their feet as half-time approached.
Lloyd Sam shot over on the half-hour when he should have scored, and Bouazza twice tested Reds goalkeeper Smith with long-range efforts.
Thornhill was brought on at half-time for Chambers, and his effect was almost immediate. He was brought down by Martin Cranie, but Cohen's resultant free-kick was headed narrowly wide by James Perch.
The Addicks' defensive plans were hit when Jonathan Fortune was withdrawn with an injury after 58 minutes, and Pardew made the daring decision to replace him with an offensive player, Darren Ambrose.
Undaunted, Luke Varney almost gave Charlton the lead but headed over with Smith wrong-footed.
Pardew eventually threw on Gray for Sam in a last-ditch attempt to take a second win of the season away from the Valley.
Cole's introduction was ultimately an enforced one, as Earnshaw was taken off with a knock 13 minutes from the end.
Meanwhile, Thornhill was booked for a foul on Nicky Bailey after 74 minutes, and he was shown his marching orders for another mistimed challenge on Basey.
