The Blades, who had lost ground on their fellow promotion chasers following three successive draws, were behind at the interval following Hameur Bouazza's shock opener.

But Kevin Blackwell's side proved too powerful in the second period with Stephen Quinn's goals sandwiching Danny Webber's close-range finish to leave Charlton rooted to the bottom of the table.

The Addicks' winless streak has now been extended to 16 matches, with their last success in the Championship coming on October 4 against Ipswich.

Bouazza, on loan from Fulham, silenced an expectant home faithful in the 33rd minute with a goal from 20 yards straight from goalkeeper Robert Elliot's clearance.

But Republic of Ireland international Quinn fired home his sixth goal of the season from the edge of the penalty area in the 65th minute and Webber put the Blades ahead at the second attempt seven minutes later.

Quinn arrowed a 20-yard free-kick into the top corner with 11 minutes remaining to complete the Blades' fightback.

Ian Bennett retained his place in goal for the Blades, prompting further speculation over the future of Paddy Kenny, who was left out of the starting line-up at Wolves on Boxing Day.

Gary Naysmith, back in place of the injured Ugo Ehiogu, was the only other change.

Charlton trio Deon Burton, Matt Holland and Grant Basey all returned for the visitors.

James Beattie headed wide and then shot straight at Addicks' goalkeeper Robert Elliot, but it was Charlton who had the better chances.

Bouazza pulled a shot wide from 12 yards and Burton fired an angled drive over the bar.

Bennett then rescued the Blades in the 25th minute when he tipped away Nick Bailey's spectacular 30-yard effort at full stretch.

Charlton took the lead when Bouazza latched on to Elliott's long clearance and drilled a low, left-footed shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the penalty area.

Blades striker Danny Webber fired over the crossbar soon after, but although the home side dominated possession up until the interval, Charlton held on to their advantage.

After the break, Kyle Naughton twice went close with long-range shots and fellow defender Chris Morgan headed just wide as the Blades set about launching a fightback.

Morgan saw another header held by Elliott and Naughton tried his luck again from outside the penalty area, but Basey did well to block.

Blackwell sent on Sheffield-born striker Billy Sharp with half-an-hour to go and two minutes later the Blades equalised.

Beattie laid the ball off inside the penalty area and Quinn rammed home a low angled shot into the corner.

The Blades made their second-half dominance tell seven minutes later. Danny Webber fired home only his second goal of the season at the second attempt after Elliott had parried his first close-range effort.

Blackwell's side made sure of the points in the 79th minute when the industrious Quinn picked himself up after being fouled by Mark Hudson to slam home a 20-yard free-kick, left-footed into the top corner.
