Playing against his former employers for the first time, McIndoe put the Robins in front from the spot three minutes after half-time and Nicky Maynard doubled their lead soon after.

Ivan Sproule's fine turn and finish looked to have made the game safe but Richie Wellens pulled a goal back before McIndoe made the game safe with a powerful effort 16 minutes from time.

Bristol City boss Gary Johnson made two changes from the midweek defeat to Birmingham with Weale coming in for the injured Adrian Basso and Sproule replacing Gavin Williams.

Sean O'Driscoll was forced into one change from the side that lost to Charlton as former Bristol City striker Darren Byfield replaced hamstring victim Gareth Taylor.

The home side made a lively start and McIndoe crossed for Adebola who was unable to direct his header on target.

McIndoe was looking lively down the left and he burst into the box but dragged the shot wide before Sproule was also off target.

The visitors gradually found their rhythm and Lewis Guy got through after capitalising on a mistake by Bradley Orr but he dragged the shot into the side netting under pressure from Louis Carey.

Doncaster began to dominate and Weale did well to save from Coppinger before blocking a shot from the same player just minutes later.

However, Bristol City did finish the half with a flourish as Sproule blazed over and Carey headed straight at Neil Sullivan.

Gary Johnson brought Marvin Elliott on for Bradley Orr at half-time and the substitute had an immediate impact as he played in Maynard who was brought down by Sullivan.

McIndoe stepped up to take the resulting penalty and smashed the ball down the centre of the goal to give the Robins the lead.

The goal rocked the visitors and Bristol City almost doubled their lead soon after but Sullivan did well to parry away Maynard's shot.

With 57 minutes gone the home side deservedly doubled their lead when Maynard played a neat one-two with Sproule before finishing well past Sullivan.

Four minutes later Sproule gave the Robins a commanding advantage when he turned Gareth Roberts superbly and squeezed the shot in at the near post.

Bristol City appeared to take their foot off the gas after the third goal and they were made to pay in the 69th minute when Coppinger cut the ball back for Wellens who drove a precise shot past Weale.

However, the home side restored the three-goal advantage five minutes later when Lee Johnson got away down the left and played the ball into McIndoe who powered in a left-foot shot from 20 yards.

James O'Connor and Wellens both went close as Doncaster pushed late on.
