Vale should have had the tie over and done with by half-time as they created and squandered a hatful of chances.

But they were caught napping in the 11th minute when Michael Proctor chased down a hopeful punt from Danny Williams and squeezed his shot past Joe Anyon.

Vale finally levelled in the 34th minute when Luke Rodgers drove in his second penalty of the season after Callum Willock was fouled by Richard Hope.

Wrexham were forced to survive another couple of scares early in the second half before the game went to extra time.

Josh Johnson and Matthew Done almost won it in open play for the visitors before they went through 5-3 on spot kicks.
