The defeat leaves Wrexham second from bottom and increased the pressure on under-fire boss Brian Carey, whose players were booed off the field at the Racecourse.

The home side had much the better of the opening 45 minutes without creating too many clear-cut openings, the best of which fell to Eifion Williams.

The striker made room for a curling shot that visiting goalkeeper Glyn Garner did well to turn behind for a corner and when Shrewsbury were unable to clear centre-half Steve Evans headed just wide.

Shrewsbury were content to soak up the pressure, with Colin Murdock a tower of strength at the back and they carved out the better opportunities, with Dave Hibbert wasting two gilt-edged chances before the break.

The deciding goal came in the 59th minute when Evans' clearance was charged down, the ball breaking nicely for Symes to drill a low shot past Williams.

It's Ronaldo isn't it? ..."   view full comment
