Shakes struck first just after the half-hour to head home a rebound from close range after Alan Connell's shot was saved by visiting goalkeeper Gavin Ward.

Wrexham had chances to get back into the game and thought they had levelled just after the break when Michael Proctor's header was saved on the line by Bees goalkeeper Simon Brown despite claims from the visiting players it had crossed the line.

Drewe Broughton thought he had given his side a lifeline but his shot was blocked by a reflex Brown save on the line.

Shakes put the result beyond doubt after 81 minutes when he latched onto Connell's flick-on to drill an unstoppable low drive past the keeper on the half volley.
