Both clubs knew it was do or die on the night and, after a tense first half, it was Mansfield who broke through with two quickfire goals early in the second half.
Gareth Evans handled in the box after 51 minutes and, although he complained he had been fouled, the spot kick was given and Jefferson Louis tucked it away.
Four minutes later, full-back John Mullins overlapped Matt Hamshaw, whose reverse pass sent him racing into the box for a low finish under Gavin Ward. The Stags had a couple of other close misses with Hamshaw and Mickey Boulding coming close to a third.
But Wrexham set up a nervous finish 12 minutes from time, as Marc Williams stuck away the loose ball after Carl Muggleton parried Stuart Nicholson's shot.
In a nervy first-half, Mansfield almost grabbed a third-minute lead when Boulding rose to meet a Hamshaw cross from the right but sent his header straight at Ward.
Stags had lost 10 and drawn one of their last 11 home games but now stand four points adrift with six games to go. Wrexham are eight points below 22nd-placed Notts County, but have a game in hand on those above them.
