Reds' stadium plans approved again

Liverpool's new stadium was approved again on Tuesday - for the third time in five years by the city council.

The Reds have twice won permission from the council but been forced to reapply after changes were deemed necessary to their new home.

On Tuesday, planning councillors gave the go-ahead to the £350million scheme - which will see a 60,000-seater built across Stanley Park not far from Anfield.

Despite permission being granted, it is still unclear when work will begin on the Reds' ground.

The club's controversial American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett ordered a wholescale redesign of the original proposal when they took over last year and their plan was approved last summer.

But it was redrawn a second time by Dallas-based architects HKS earlier this year when the tycoons decided it was too expensive.

The new scheme includes a number of changes, notably a smaller car park beneath the stadium and a reduced height.

The planning committee also met to discuss proposals for a new Everton ground in Kirkby, Merseyside.

But the item was withdrawn from the agenda after hearing the plans had been "changed significantly", said a Liverpool Council spokesman.

It is thought the next hearing will be at the end of the month.

"Firstly: it's 15000 extra seats initially, rising to 26000 extra in the near future. Secondly: Like it or not they'll cost considerably more than £25 on average and the extra corporate seats will contribute more than all the extra 'ordinary' fans put together. Thirdly: As much as people keep going on about the debt thing, debt is actually a good thing for a public company provided it doesn't reach stupid levels as it lowers the overall cost of capital. And believe it or not £300m for a company the size of LFC isn't all that much. You've got to accept it's a business now and it has to be run like one to compete"

"ok craigsta so 7.5m each year justifies moving from anfield? are lfc getting this stadium for free or it being paid for? £350m isnt it which will no doubt rise once work gets underway. if ive worked that out right it will take almost 47 years to clear that debt with the extra revenue and thats not taking into account any price rises or interest."

"Told you from the start that the new super arena was a PR trick to win the fans over and in the end we would be stuck with a sardine can and a bill."
