The 21-year-old Norway international has been linked with the Magpies, and a string of other European clubs, after impressing in last season's Champions League.

However Rosenborg are reluctant to sell the midfielder and expect him to sign a contract extension to keep him at the club.

"It looks good. He has not signed yet, but we expect him to sign within the next 14 days," the club's sports director Erik Hoftun told Dagbladet.

"Per is a player we really want to keep. The day when a club table a lot of money for him, we will consider it."

Meanwhile the player's agent, Andreas Ekker, has claimed he is yet to receive an offer from Tyneside.

"Many clubs from the big league keep tabs on him," Ekker said.

"I can tell that no-one from Newcastle have asked about him. He is really ambitious and in case Newcastle give us an offer, we will consider it seriously.

"We will then look at the entire package they offer, including how the coach would like to use him.

"We know that some interested clubs have watched him both for the club and with the national team."
