Intertoto outing possible for Barry

Gareth Barry could instigate his own return to Aston Villa's side for the second leg of the club's Intertoto Cup clash against Odense.

Manager Martin O'Neill stated Barry could play some part in the crucial third-round tie at Villa Park on Saturday if the England midfielder feels he is "in the right frame of mind".

Barry missed the first-leg, a 2-2 draw, in Denmark last week as he had only recently returned from the two-week suspension he received for publicly criticising O'Neill and stating he wished to leave the club he has served for 10 years to join Liverpool.

Barry wore the claret and blue shirt for the first time since revealing his ambition to move to Anfield as Villa played a pre-season friendly at Walsall in midweek.

For the majority of the hour he played at the Banks's Stadium, his every touch was roundly booed by the few thousand Villa fans that had made the short journey.

Ahead of Odense's visit to Villa Park, where a crowd of around 25,000 are expected, O'Neill said: "Gareth Barry, if he is in the right frame of mind, has a chance of playing tomorrow.

"What happened at Walsall on Tuesday must have been expected and at this minute, his mindset is pretty decent.

"It also depends what the view is of the rest of the team and things like that, but I will take all of that into consideration. He is with us in the squad.

"All this is what Gareth has said. If he is in the right frame of mind and he is up for it, then he wants to play the game.

"The rest is up to me, whether I put him in the team or in the squad or go with the group of players from last week."

O'Neill added: "Fitness is another issue, and that is what the exercise was all about at Walsall.

"He has come back from a sore foot and he has not had a lot of training. For that reason, the fitness, he thought he needed to play on Tuesday and he wanted to play on Tuesday.

"I thought he did very well in the game on Tuesday and I thought in terms of fitness it was exactly what he wanted.

"We were always down to play 60 minutes, or as long as he thought he could play, and 60 minutes is exactly what he wanted."

"Unless something radical changes it appears the Barry is NOT going to LFC. This could be a chastening experience for all parties at AVFC, involving much soul-searching. Questions will be asked about (1) Why Barry acted the way he did over the last 3-4 months transfer-saga fiasco (2) Whether MON and RL played "hardball" for too long with Benitez (3) What IS the real market value of Barry (4) How should the fans judge Barry if he should stay with AVFC (5) What is Barry's future role within the team if he should stay (6) What lessons we can learn from this esperience. BUT what is still aggravating is that should Barry stay with us, rwo people will walk away scott-free: Benitez and Gerrard. I will be interested to see how Barry responds to these two characters in the future!! The Villa-LFC match early season could be an interesting event!! UTV for tonight. I'll be there to smell the DANISSSSHHH bacon getting fried!!"
