Phelan: Promoted to assistant manager

Phelan, a former United player who has worked his way up through the ranks of the Old Trafford backroom staff, has been working as a first-team coach since 2001 when Steve McClaren left for Middlesbrough.

Dutchman Rene Meulensteen has also been promoted from technical skills development officer to take on Phelan's former role.

Sir Alex Ferguson told the club's official website: "I am delighted that Mick and Rene have agreed to fill these important positions.

"Mick knows Manchester United inside out, having been associated with the club for the best part of 20 years.

"He is a very talented and professional coach, whose ability and contribution to the club's success has often been understated.

"Rene brings different ideas and experience to the role of first-team coach. I believe the two will provide an excellent team to continue the club's willingness to try new ideas and constantly drive for success in an increasingly competitive game."

"very gd top c, very highly rated coach and very very loyal, am sure one day he will go into management. he knows the players and the fans so this should be a great appointment, as for sum1 new, get a foreign coach in and let him proove hes worth moving up like rene"

NorthernRed (Manchester United fan)

"I was hoping they would bring someone in from the outside as I think it's always good to have a new face and someone with new ideas who hasn't been influenced by the club and the pre-existing methods."

"Prepare to see a lot more of the inside of this mans thighs from the bench. The man refuses to wear longer shorts!!"
