Chelsea captain John Terry says he was one of "a few players" behind Luiz Felipe Scolari - and he feels partly to blame for his sacking.
Terry was informed by a member of the Chelsea hierarchy on Monday afternoon that Scolari had been sacked.
The news brought genuine sadness for the Blues skipper, who enjoyed working with Scolari.
And Terry feels some of Chelsea's senior players need to analyse themselves before pushing all the blame for a season of disappointment at the Brazilian's door.
"I was very shocked and disappointed because I and a few of the players were fully behind the manager," Terry told BBC Radio Five.
"The people in charge at Chelsea make those decisions but I am disappointed.
"I have sympathy for Scolari," added the England defender. "He had my support, that's for sure and two or three other players will say exactly the same thing, I'm sure.
"He's a great man. Unfortunately we weren't playing well and it falls on his head.
"Maybe they should look at some of us because we did under-achieve."
Terry also admitted his form has not been good enough this season - and he does not believe he is on his own.
"A few of us have not been performing as well as we can do for the club, or getting the right results for the manager," he added on BBC Radio Five.
"It is a shame because it falls on his head when we should be looking at ourselves and focusing on what we could do.
"We should have won a lot more games under the manager."
It is now becoming apparent Scolari's fate was sealed last week at a meeting that involved Michael Ballack, Didier Drogba and Petr Cech.
Once Chelsea failed to overcome Hull on Saturday, there was no way back for a man who has won a World Cup and reached the European Championship Final with Portugal in 2004.
Guus Hiddink is already in line to replace Scolari, at least on a part-time basis, although Terry does not feel the events of the last few days can be allowed to pass without some kind of self-analysis from the Chelsea camp.
"The overall picture needs to be looked at," he said. "The powers at the club need to look at that."
Terry does feel, though, that Hiddink would be a good choice as Scolari's replacement.
"He's very astute and with his connections with Roman, there are links there," he said.
"He likes to play football. His teams get the ball out from the back and play an awful lot but I don't know too much about him. We'll have to wait and see."

"superspurs83, Tottenham Hotspur fan. yeah so when Ramos was in charge at the start of the season it was all the players fault yeah ? Don't be stupid you idiot, they are both at fault, i honestly think we shouldnt have got rid of him half way through the season but there we go we have. Yeah we arent playing as well as we normally do but lets take a look at you! MR we are going to finish in the top 3 hahaha! And guess what, theres still a very good chance you could get relegated you fool. Made me laugh so much at the start of the season, 3 lads i know were convinced that you lot were going to be a top 4 team and do so well. So im pleased to say its brightens my day and makes me smile so much to see where u are in the league, oh and if you do get relegated i dont think anyone in the prem will be sorry for u, not arsenal and defiantly not us. Enjoy! maybe darren bent will start scoring eh ;) haha CAAAAAREFREE!"

"HellAngel: Have you not seen the tranny that looks EXACTLY the same as JT? check the metro website if not. Anyway, why was those players at the meeting? thats surely unfair as those players blatently didnt want scolari there! This is what happens when a clueless-about-football billionaire takes over and wants instant payback for his investment. "

"This does not look good for you guys. A lot of stuff going on behind the scenes, and why on earth invite Drogba to a meeting to discuss the boss? Madness. Abramovich should not stick his nose in EVERYTHING. I though even sacking Ranieri was a bit odd, afterall he was actually doing quite well. But since then a lot worse things have happened. Thiss just can not be good for morale. I wonder how it would be to a fly on the wall at Stamford Bridge. Soap opera is a metaphor that comes to mind."

"can't seem to understand what is going on at my club..abrahamovic should leave ootball matters to be handled by people who are competent in the business.that was why the club fans were not pleased when he let jose mourinho go.JM was someone who was very passionate about the club and wanted to be a part of it's history.it's regrettable to think of how many coaches Abrahamovic has sacked since he bought over chelsea..the thing is,to fully evolve as a football team that plays exciting football and makes returns on investments,a loy is needed, and these things take time..i hope Abrahamovic comes to realise this before he wrecks the club that we have been so in love with..shout out to all my chelsea co-fans..so long as it is daytime, the sky is always BLUE "

"At the end of the day the manager is accountable and takes the rap and the players that are underperforming are next to face the axe and there are quite a few of them."
