Darren Bent has expressed his happiness with life at Sunderland after a spell at Tottenham in which he feels he was never accepted by the fans.
Spurs signed Bent for £16.5million from Charlton in 2007 but the striker's time at White Hart Lane was not entirely successful as he struggled to find the back of the net during his first season at the club.
He hit the target more often during his second campaign but Bent was offloaded to Sunderland over the summer and returns to his former club for the first time on Sunday.
The 25-year-old feels like he has been given a new lease of life in the North East but still harbours some bad feelings about his time at Tottenham.
"It has been fantastic moving to Sunderland. Being at Spurs I was on a downer," he told the Daily Mirror.
"People were criticising me left right and centre, questioning me, which in my eyes was ridiculous.
"I still scored 17 goals last season which made me top goalscorer and people were still criticising me and speculating about my role.
"I was fighting an uphill battle before I went there. I knew they had Defoe, Berbatov and Keane.
"Every club needs four good strikers they always say. It wasn't just my decision to go there. Other people were influencing it as well.
"So by the time I got there it was a bit like: 'Why is he here?'."
Bent revealed his delight to have moved to the Stadium of Light, saying that the feeling of being wanted by the fans has added to his motivation.
"It's completely different at Sunderland. I had thousands of people on my Twitter page saying we want you here," he added.
"I just wanted to get up here and play for these people. It is the faith they have showed in me that makes me want to go the extra mile for them."

SeaburnSAFC (Sunderland fan)
"To add: Sunderland are also an OLDER club formed in 1879 Tottenham 1882 so beaten again im afraid.
This statement would be true regarding Darren Bents move to Sunderland: Darren has moved north to a older club with a lot more league titles to it`s name. The backing of a crowd some 30% larger to the one he was used to was a reason behind this move. "

"potter_dave the hard truth
Six league titles SAFC Two league titles SPURS
The league counts a lot more than cups A LOT more. Fair enough both teams may never add to their tallies but the hard facts are 6-2. SAFC therefore bigger club. SAFC 49,000 SPURS 36,000 stadium FACT.
We have won less cups yes that is another FACT but again cups are won by lesser clubs every year and true big clubs win the league over a full season."

"SeaburnSAFC - Yes, smaller club. You only have a larger ground because you moved, whilst we explored ways to develop the ocal area, something whic will be done over the next few years and completely eclipse your place. Also, where's your European competition and success? Seriously, we're ever-present in the Prem, 5th longest servants of the top flight at the moment. How often have your lot had to get promoted back? Honestly, we may be "behind Arsenal and Chelsea", but your lot are behind a club who aren't even in the top flight! (maybe two actually, recent history put you and Boro pretty close!)"

"Spurred_on (Tottenham Hotspur fan).... Smaller club??? Check your history mate you will find we have won the league more times than your pathetic club we also have a larger ground with better support. Better both in numbers, loyalty and noise!! You are in London thats the only thing going for you but far behind Arsenal and Chelsea!!"
