Harry: Capello has Defoe dilemma

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp believes five-goal striker Jermain Defoe has given England manager Fabio Capello a major selection headache.

Redknapp: Full of praise for Defoe
Redknapp: Full of praise for Defoe

After 15 goals for club and country this season - including five in Sunday's 9-1 Premier League defeat of Wigan - it appears only self-destruction can prevent Defoe from figuring in the World Cup next summer.

And Redknapp said on Monday night: "He's a great little goalscorer.

"Wayne Rooney is fantastic, it's who plays with him. He's a complete all-round player but in terms of out-and-out finishers he (Defoe) is the best around at the moment.

"Emile Heskey has done well with Rooney and I'd always take Crouchy (Peter Crouch) in a squad because he gives you a different option. Carlton Cole is in good form as well. I wouldn't like to say who he (Capello) would take."

Redknapp maintains Tottenham can break into the top four, pinpointing Aston Villa - Spurs' next opponents in the Premier League - and Manchester City as their main rivals.

He continued on BBC Radio 5 Live: "Anything other than a European place would be a big disappointment.

"We only missed out by one point last season - but it's not impossible to finish in the top four.

"There are one or two other teams - Sunderland are going well, and Everton - but any one of Manchester City, Villa and ourselves I think have got a chance of breaking into the top four. Why can't it be done?

"We've got a strong squad - and we've got Luka Modric to come back. There's more than enough strength in depth.

"I don't want to sell Roman Pavlyuchenko. Technically he's a fantastic talent but he keeps saying he wants to go.

"He's got great ability but he wants to play regularly but it's been difficult with Defoe, Crouch and (Robbie) Keane all doing well. It's unlucky for him."

Meanwhile, Redknapp believes Roberto Martinez's side will overcome Sunday's humiliation.

The former West Ham and Bournemouth manager added: "Wigan will be okay.

"I've got lot of time for the manager - I watched Swansea a lot last year and he got them playing some fantastic football.

"They've got well beaten at Portsmouth, Hull and Tottenham but they've beaten Chelsea and Villa this season.

"He (Martinez) is going to stick with his beliefs and there are going to be days when they're bedding in when they're going to be a bit up and down perhaps."

"rooney is a cert. defoe i think just booked his ticket with his last performance, crouch is very close the other 1 striker is wide open.

bent is not international quality and for non british defenders he is easy to mark. against the sluggish british centre half he looks quite handy, against any defender with pace and awareness he's a useless sack of spuds.

heskey is pretty awful in front of goal but does offer strength and controlling the pace of a game through holding up the ball. however we have all seen him at the euros and world cup and refereee's dont like him. he gets penalised for every aerial challenge he makes. crouch gets similar treatment but at least scores goals.

agbonlahor - useless at international level from what weve seen so far. pace is not everything on an international level.

owen??? a poor mans defoe on current form.

Theo Walcot - the long forgotten wonderkid! is he fit? is he alive?

Roonery, Defoe and Crouch should be on the plane

"Defoe, Rooney, Crouch and Heskey. End of. If you don't think Defoe is good enough "james17119 (Norwich City fan) then you outta your depth! He's got 6 goals at international level this year, and riffles is at least 12 a season, Consistently i may add. Top striker, qwho when given a run can be a true asset.

And Heskey brings in four more accomplished scorers in Walcott, Rooney, Gerrard and Lampard, so his lack of goals seems totally irrelevant! It's tactics, so play the big lad!"

"Emile Heskey is a very frustrating player, but somehow, whoever he plays alongside does score goals. It could cost him that he's lucky to net one in every 10 games - for all of he benefit he brings to a team, that isn't good enough. But I'll not knock him as some do.

I agree that Crouch gives options, but chosing between him and Bent as an impact super sub, I'd have to go for Bent.

True, Arseneal, Defoe is a confidence player. All centre forwards are to different extents. But unless he hits a dreadful slump, he really must be on that plane.

Cole has been in great form, but he's looked good in the past. It would be good for England if he can continue playing well, but his career to date doesn't give confidence that he will. I would be very happy if he proves me wrong.

So I see Rooney and Defoe as pretty much having their seats reserved; along with Heskey or Cole and Crouch or Bent.

Michael Owen? Can we really afford to waste a space on a player who can't stay fit for more than 2 weeks at a time? Pity, because at his best, he would surely be there. But no! "

"cbsafc (Sunderland fan)- also bear in mind that Defoe has missed 4 games this season, he has still scored consistently

"james17119 (Norwich City fan)- Defoe isnt good enough? with the exception of Rooney name me 3 strikers that are better than Defoe and justify the comments, because I cant think of any! Agbonlahor is quality but is he a better finisher than Defoe....Nope!, Heskey....No Comment!, Crouch, love the guy but not in Defoe's league, Bent, very very good goal scorer and should go as well but all round game is not good enough as he tends to switch off in games

"There is someone who would play the Heskey role so much better - Rooney! Has the power, the engine and the pace. Would score goals where Heskey doesn't and would allow a sniper like Defoe into the side to be the point man. "

alfried1983 (Tottenham Hotspur fan)

"there seems to be the common view that rooney and heskey should be the pairing for england. this concerns me. this puts all the pressure on rooney for out goals. say rooney is having an off day where do the goals come from then? i think he is a great player, but more of a link forward than out and out stiker. surley we have a whole midfieild to set the strikers up. when we play heskey we are essentially playing a 4-5-1"

Nikolas11 (West Ham United fan)

"If four strikers I would go with Rooney, Defoe, Carlton Cole and Bent. Cant really make up my mind about the last one. In this scenario England have three very different strikers and one (Bent) who can play either as an in-the-box striker and as a target man. This setting would give us lots of different options tactically."

liverpool_1986

"BUCKLAND1 - shut up. Heskey?? Mr 1 shot on target all season. loser!!

This article should be true and the rate Defoe is scoring goals should make Capello think.

However im sure like all the other fans out there (except UTD fans) I can see defoe being left in the shadows while the none scoring and uninspiring Rooney leads England to world cup failure with his inept abilities up front. "
