Fergie waiting on van der Sar

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is still waiting to discover whether Edwin van der Sar intends to extend his career by another season.

Van der Sar: Fergie waits on Dutchman

Van der Sar celebrated his 39th birthday recently, having started the season on the treatment table after breaking a couple of fingers in a pre-season encounter with Bayern Munich.

The veteran Dutchman's performances have been of their usual top quality, leading to the belief he will sign another one-year contract.

That news will not go down well with either Tomasz Kuszczak or Ben Foster, who expressed his frustration last week at the bizarre situation he finds himself in - back-up at United and a starter in England's last two internationals.

Ferguson remains committed to both men, but he still intends to give Van der Sar as much time as he needs to reach a conclusion about his future.

"I don't know his plans," said the United chief.

"When you get to that age and have a young family, there are a lot of things to consider.

"It is usually sometime in December that he outlines his plans and how long he thinks he can go on.

"He is a very intelligent man, who understands his body better than anyone. He will come to the right decision."

Yet while Ferguson is confident about United's present, he appears equally certain about the future.

While there have been plenty of suggestions that he is seeking reinforcements for his goalkeeping department, the Red Devils chief insists he is fully supportive of Kuszczak and Foster, who is tipped to face Besiktas in the Champions League at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

"I have said all along, Ben has terrific ability," said Ferguson.

"He needs plenty of game experience, which he has not got at the moment, but the future rests with him and Tomasz Kuszczak.

"The two of them will fight it out, I am sure of that."

"EverTheOptimist (Manchester United fan) I'm aware that statistic, but just try to touch about we were struggling in goal keeping department on that day. Bosnich,Taibi,Barthez,Howard,Carrol...all of them failed to fill SCHMEICEL gloves. Remember when we were in title drought for 3 straight seasons...then come Van Der Sar to become an answer to our struggle for years, filling SCHMEICEL gloves. I hopes it's not happen again."

"haaX (Manchester United fan) " Yeh, we won the league three times in four seasons. Although we were sh**e in the CL." - Is it enough for you we just compete for domestic competition but struggle in Europe??? ~LUHG~"

"I think Man Utd might be better off signing someone like Jasskeleinen than spending big money on unproven goalkeepers (at least at EPL level). Due to age he'd not be there as long as others could be but generally quality is better than quantity."

"Bring in Lloris if not him than Adler or Neuer but I hope VDS stays another year if we don't get any of the three because I feel so much better watching United with him on goal then Foster. I'm nervous when the ball is near the box when Foster is in =( And remember that Jack Rodwell shot from this weekend? The guy is almost 40 and has reflexes like a young man and I strongly belive foster would never get near that shot because his anticipation is just so poor =("

"aye united need another keeper when van der sar retires. fergie just wants good cash for foster which is why he's bigging him up so much."
