Gunners chairman backing Wenger

Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood insists it would not be a disaster if the Gunners go another season without a trophy.

The Gunners have failed to win the league since the 2003-4 'Invincibles' season and will only finish third again this term, despite playing fantastic football at times.

In a results business, their French midfielder Mathieu Flamini, who has signed for AC Milan, says he might have stayed if they had won the league.

But Hill-Wood has dismissed any doubters and has re-iterated his belief in manager Arsene Wenger and his ability to turn things around in the long-term.

He told the News of the World: "I don't feel depressed about it. Overall, it has not been a bad season. Other clubs would have been happy to be in our position.

"Clearly we want to win but can we survive when we don't win year in, year out? Yes, we can. We will start next season with the aim of winning something.

"But if we don't, I will not be jumping off Tower Bridge. Winning matters but it wouldn't be a disaster if we don't win something.

"It's not easy winning the Champions League and the Premier League. There is only one winner and we have no divine right to win a trophy.

"I was very happy with the way we played but we are in the results business and I suppose I am disappointed with the final result. I don't feel depressed about it. We had a better season than many people thought we would."

Wenger has been criticised in some quarters for not improving his squad in the January transfer window.

Hill-Wood denied that there was not money there for signings but backed his manager's dealings in the transfer market.

He said: "We have never denied Arsene Wenger a penny. Whenever he has wanted to buy, he has. What he is not prepared to do is to buy a big name that everyone will be happy with until they see him play.

"He is a very good judge. He has brought in so many world-class players, some of whom people hadn't even heard of, and I'm sure he will continue to do that.

"He is not happy that we didn't win anything. He takes it very much to heart but he seems to have recovered now.

"It's laughable to think he doesn't have the support of the board. We are very happy with him and he with us."

"One more nail in the coffin of the current Board and the Hill-Wood dynasty! As supporters we should have the final say - instead of buy or leave, SACK OR REPLACE both the Board and AW! We need fresh blood if the club is to be The Arsenal! There is no harm in winning trophies as the club stands for that - and not the Hill-Wood Dynasty!"

"foward thinker,2nd 3rd 4th=good season,feeder club,no money,top players go,crap players stay,are they the new west ham?"

"What a total muppet that moron Hill-Wood is to come out and say it¿s fine for Arsenal to not win anything next season. This has to be the clearest indication that the board of Arsenal FC are happy for us to be the 3rd or 4th best team in the EPL provided we rake in the dosh. Like Lehman said Wenger needs to be put under much more pressure to deliver trophies if we are a ¿so called¿ big club!!! Who do you think will remember us playing all this ¿eye catching¿ football in a few years?? But I¿m sure people will remember how Chelski & Man U went head to head on the last day to win the EPL!!!! Gosh I wonder how dumb the people are at time to be totally brain washed by these muppets! I remember seeing a banner in support of wenger last week that said ¿In Wenger we trust¿ but I think it should have read ¿IN WENGER WE TRUST TO DELIVER 4th PLACE & ENOUGH MONEY FOR ARSENAL FC BUSINESS¿. Wenger should recommend to the BOARD about having more celebrities, show girls at half time & pop corn¿ after all we don¿t want a trip to the Emirates to be remembered as a visit to that BIG WHITE ELEPHANT do we? At least get some showgirls to dance while Phillip Ponderous does the half time warm up!!! Wake up man if this club wants to be considered in the same vein as Barca, Madrid, Bayen & Man u & oh even L¿pool(at least 2 CL finals + 5 european cups) we need to win things¿ Not just be in it for the ride!! I feel sick reading how some of you muppet are so happy with what we have archived in 4 years¿ NOTHING! REMEMBER for all the money Wenger got for sellnig Anelka the lad has TWO of WHICH WENGER HAS ONLY GOT 1 FRO ALL THIS EXPERIENCE!!! No No I don't mean B@LLS but CL MEDALS!! "
