I'll be ready for finals - van Persie

Arsenal forward Robin van Persie is confident that he will be fully fit to take his place at the Euro 2008 finals next month.

The striker struggled with injuries throughout the Premier League campaign - but he is confident he is now nearing full fitness.

Van Persie was speaking after linking up with the Dutch squad ahead of this summer's European Championships - although the party still has 26 players and three will need to be axed by Marco van Basten in the coming week.

"After all the physical niggles I had this season it is not obvious that I am going to be at the top of my form," said van Persie.

"I must take it gradually (getting back to full fitness) but I am optimistic, I think, that I will be ready for the beginning of the tournament.

"It is both tiring physically as well as psychologically because each time I thought I was getting back to being fully fit, I had a reverse.

"The coach has confidence in me, which is very pleasing and reassuring."

Van Persie is unlikely to be risked for this Saturday's warm-up match with Ukraine on Saturday.

Dutch coach van Basten added: "I do not want to take a risk with Robin.

"My wish is that he will be 100 per cent fit on June 9 [when Holland open their campaign against Italy]."

"only way he'll last the whole tournament is if they wrap him up in cotton wool and have a zimmerframe nearby....."

zzglong (Arsenal fan)

"He's guaranteed to get injuried again and will be out for the next season only to be fit during the off-season and get injuried in friendlies AGAIN and the cycle repeats. Are we getting rid of him and Rosicky to free up some money for really useful people or what?"

dimitriward (Arsenal fan)

"Best wishes to RVP. Hope he gets the props he deserves this tournament."
