Young vows to catch Capello's eye

Aston Villa winger Ashley Young is determined to win back his place in the England squad after missing out against Andorra and Croatia.

Young: Keen to catch Capello's eye

The 23-year-old, who has won three caps, was omitted by Fabio Capello for this month's World Cup qualifiers.

Young last played in the friendly against Trinidad and Tobago at the end of last season and he is keen to win back his place.

He told Villa's official website: "You always want to be in the squad when it's announced and there was a bit of disappointment when I saw I wasn't included.

"But it's the manager's decision. I just have to keep playing well for Villa. The main focus is my club form.

"I can't dwell on being left out because it won't change anything. All I need to do is keep working hard in training and play well for Villa."

"Downing was terrible on Saturday, I can't see him wearing an England shirt again...don't worry Ash, you'll get the chance sooner rather than later."

"There's not a lot more than Ash can do other than play at the top of his game which he does week in week out anyway. He'd easily be a star in the England side but yet again we have a hopeless manager who believes Downing to be of more use. Like Lampard, Downing is class for his club but poor for his country. Young need a chance at least as he is creative, skillful and can cross and finish, all things which a number of players who regularly make the England squad seem to be lacking."

smashby82 (Aston Villa fan)

"Ok Villa fan says Gabby and Ashley should be in the senior England squad - suprise, suprise. Yes, I'm biased, but I'd definitely have them in there. However, given the feeble performance of England in the last two years, maybe it's better not to be involved. I used to think we (England) had a great team that just weren't performing at international level. Whatever you think about coaches, tactics, formations etc. etc. I don't think we can escape that our players aren't that good. I just hope we Cappello can turn it around but, whoever he picks, he's got his work cut out for him!"
