Vital clash for Villa - O'Neill

Martin O'Neill believes Aston Villa's next Premier League game against Harry Redknapp's Portsmouth on Saturday is 'absolutely vital'.

The clash is a six-pointer as both teams will be aiming for European qualification via the league this term.

And the game is also a chance for Villa to get back to winning ways after O'Neill's side were comprehensively outplayed in their 2-0 defeat to classy Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last weekend.

O'Neill told Villa's official website: "I'm delighted with the attitude of the side and I'm delighted with the way we have been playing.

"But Chelsea's performance last weekend is where we need to get to. That's what we want to aspire to - otherwise it's pointless being in the Premier League.

"That's the standard you have to achieve and it's not reaching that twice a season, it's getting there on a regular basis.

"In fairness to us, I don't think many teams would have lived with Chelsea in that first half.

"But by the same token, it doesn't mean that you just down tools and have your own mini league. Not at all. This is where we want to be and expect to be.

"We were on the up and then suddenly we're dealt a real severe lesson. You then have to pick yourselves up and go again.

"Portsmouth becomes absolutely vital. They had a stodgy start but they have won the last couple of games and they are flying again.

"And they are capable of scoring goals."
