Villa make £12m Upson bid - Report

Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill is understood to have submitted a bid in the region of £12million for West Ham defender Matthew Upson.

Villa are in the market for defensive reinforcements having lost Martin Laursen and Zat Knight this summer and they are believed to have identified Upson as their top target.

Upson's future has been the subject of constant speculation amid reports he could be sold to ease West Ham's financial concerns.

The 30-year-old admitted last weekend he was unsure of his long-term future at Upton Park as the Hammers look to raise funds for their own signings.

Manchester City have also been credited with an interest in Upson, but Sky Sports understands that Villa have firmed up their interest with a £12million bid for the former Arsenal man.

Villa boss O'Neill is thought to be a long-term admirer of Upson and will be hoping to land the central defender before the transfer window closes.

"12 million for 30 yr old mattew upson.....u can smell the desperation!!! this would be another nail in the coffin..shows once again how pathetic oneils transfer policies are...still no idea who to buy!!!!! having had best part of 3 months to find a centre half!!! "

"Villa82 it was the season before! 35,000 fans shouting at the top of their voice! I have to admit i was one of them, however its only because we knew he was a big player for them and for him to be injured was a great news. funny though"

"Overated but would still be a good signing. 12 is too high and besides this sounds like Speculation... BBC / SlySports have no stories on this.

"I think he's good, but I've never heard any player (including Robbie Savage, & Andy Johnson) get more grief off the Holte End than Upson. I can't remember if it was this season or last when we played West Ham, but I think he injured himself after 30 mins just to get off the pitch! UTV"

"because of the chairmen in the league who have wasted the extra sky tv revenue and inflated the transfer market the only people that win are the agents. the selling club might have 12 mil but thats the going rate for an average player now so thats soon spent. on the face of it its stupid money but thats the going rate now. exactly what villa need though. "Be great to sign him and have him score the winner at St.Andrews!!"

"a great buy hope this is true marty, due to the over inflation of buying English player i think 12 million is good for an experienced premiership defender, i for one would feel a bit more happy and a bit more secure on how our season will progress with upson in team."

lukeavfc (Aston Villa fan)

"very happy about us finally signing a defender but i dont think hes the defender we need. gonna be a good signing never the less though. would still like a stronger more vastly experienced centre half though, someone to step into laursens shoes, doesnt look like theres one available though, upson is just another cuellar and davies, i dont think hes any better than the 2 of them but at least it gives us a different option and a little more depth. good signing. its got my blessing lol. UTV"
