McLeish planning transfer swoop

Birmingham City manager Alex McLeish has ruled out any outlandish transfer punts as he looks to fine-tune his Blues squad.

Birmingham's match at home to struggling Barnsley is one of several which may throw up new leaders in the fledgling table by full time on Saturday.

The Blues go into their third match of the campaign as one of only three teams boasting a 100% record so far - behind table-toppers Coventry, Bristol City, and Preston who travel to take on Sheffield Wednesday.

McLeish was unable to keep his team in the top flight last season, but they are so far living up to their favourites' billing to bounce back.

With less than two weeks to go to the end of the transfer window, the Scot at home to appears satisfied he has most bases covered - and his strategy will be to rely on good-sense signings rather than any long shots.

"I'm hoping to do at least one transfer before the end of the window, but if I could get two it would give us a bit more security," he told his club's official website. "There will also be opportunities to loan.

"But I would prefer to take in players that are tried and trusted rather than a loan that's tipped as one for the future and I'm not sure about - unless it's coming from a source that I have great respect for.

"That's my game plan."
