Goalkeeping coach Fred Barber claims Ali Al-Habsi must be patient in his bid to usurp Jussi Jaaskelainen as Bolton's number one.
The Oman international has emerged as a credible challenger to the Finn at the Reebok Stadium, but the Trotters veteran appears far from ready to give up his spot.
Barber believes Al-Habsi will need plenty more perseverance to dislodge Jaaskelainen, who has been Bolton's first-choice keeper since summer 1998.
He told the Bolton News: "I have sat down with Ali and talked about this and he wants to stay at Bolton.
"If it was any goalkeeper aside from Jussi he might have a problem and he would probably be knocking on the manager's door.
"But he understands Jussi is one of the top three keepers in the Premier League and he'll have to be patient for now and take his chance when it comes along."
