"The manager (Fabio Capello) will pick who he thinks is the best," Lampard told The Sun's website ahead of Wednesday's friendly in France.
"All I can say is that John Terry, on and off the pitch, is a monster of a captain.
"On the pitch he plays with the attitude that you want your captain to have. He talks to people around him.
"Off the pitch he gets people to together and is a big personality in the dressing room.
"I can only give him a huge reference in those terms.
"Obviously, there are other candidates. We've got people who can be leaders but John is outstanding."
