Phil Jagielka, who netted the only goal at Deepdale, Joleon Lescott, Nuno Valente and Phil Neville were part of the side which lost 4-2 at non-league Cambridge last week.

Round told evertonTV: "The effort was fantastic from a very young team. The back four, who were all senior, were excellent, especially after the Cambridge game where they weren't really at the races after a tough opening two weeks of pre-season.

"They didn't live up to their reputations in that game and the manager was quite tough with them afterwards but in this game they were outstanding."

"So selling Johnson we are down to a squad of 21 players of which a couple are youngsters and have no appearances thus far for Everton. Who genuinely believes are squad is going to be big enough for a season or will we limp through till Christmas and then add a few more?"
