It is widely believed the former England boss will take the side for the last time at Middlesbrough on Sunday.

Owner Thaksin Shinawatra is reportedly dismayed at the club's apparent lack of progress, but City could get into the UEFA Cup after all as England's representatives through the Fair Play League.

By then Eriksson might be settling in at Portuguese side Benfica for a third time.

He is refusing to comment on whether that move is an option but reflected on a debut season in English domestic football.

"I believe we have had a successful campaign as we are on the right side of the table," said Eriksson.

"We came in and bought a lot of new players. I know we have not played brilliant football in all 37 games but many times we played very well.

"It is important now we forget the speculation about me and focus on Middlesbrough. The players are determined to finish with a good result."

City fans are to stage a march on Saturday outside the City of Manchester Stadium in support of Eriksson.

Supporters groups are alarmed at the situation and want the manager to stay, and Eriksson is grateful for their backing.

"I have to say thank you to them. The fans get 10 out of 10 from me," said Eriksson.

"The supporters have been great all season. You can feel that support. They have been fantastic to me and the team."

Sweden goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson has been recalled to the side after enduring a frustrating campaign with Joe Hart the preferred choice between the posts.

Eriksson said: "I want to give Isaksson a game as he has been a fantastic professional."
