Life is sweet for evergreen Giggs

Ryan Giggs got his hands on the Champions League trophy for a second time and maintained that life was sweeter than ever.

The most decorated player in Manchester United's history stepped off the bench to play his part in the dramatic penalty shoot-out victory against Chelsea in Moscow.

The 34-year-old marked a record-breaking 759th appearance for the club by scoring from the spot.

Giggs, who is out of contract next summer, confirmed he will see out his glittering career at Old Trafford.

He said: "I am enjoying my football more than ever but we will just wait and see what happens. I have another year left on my contract.

"While I don't think I can play all the time, I have managed about 40 games this season.

"That's more than a lot of people and I played about the same number last season.

"All right towards the end of the season I have not been starting games but it is not as if I am playing less and less games. We will see next season what happens."

Giggs believes everything is in place for United to go on and dominate the domestic and European game for years to come after they ended a nine-year absence by lifting the trophy.

It was back in 1999 they achieved a memorable last-gasp European Cup victory against Bayern Munich in Barcelona.

He said: "The challenge for the club and these players is to go on. We don't want to wait another nine years for the trophy.

"We need to be competing for the Champions League every year. This is a young team and I am sure we will add to the squad.

"There is huge potential here and the players have the experience of what it takes to win the Champions League. So everything is in our favour."

It was an emotional night for Giggs as he overtook Sir Bobby Charlton's record of appearances for the Red Devils.

Charlton, now a club director, embraced him after the dramatic victory, 50 years on from the Munich air disaster and 40 years on from the club's first triumph in the competition.

Alongside Charlton in the Luzhniki Stadium were fellow survivors of that dreadful day in Germany - Harry Gregg, Albert Scanlon, Bill Foulkes and Kenny Morgans.

Giggs said the players are inspired by the heroes of the past.

He said: "Sir Bobby came over and congratulated me on winning the Champions League.

"I think all the players have respect for the history of this club and what it is all about.

"Sir Bobby, quite rightly, is a massive part of that history. It is 50 years from the time of the Busby Babes and 40 years from first winning the European Cup. It might well be fate that we have won it again this year."

Even though he played a cameo role Giggs savoured the experience more than he did in 1999 when Bayern Munich were famously overcome in Barcelona.

Victory against Chelsea meant that United had gone through the competition with a proud unbeaten record.

Giggs added: "I took it in a lot more this time as there won't be too many more of these nights. At 26 it was a bit of a blur.

"In 1999 we had a bit of luck. We probably didn't have as much luck this time but tactically we were good all the way through the competition. I think we deserved to win it."

"A truly professional footballer, and takes good care of his body to maintain the staminar required for the game even at his present age. Always like him and agree that he is by far the top 5 left wingers (if not the best) of all time. He will be sorely missed when he retires."

tsule (Manchester United fan)

"Great United has shown that they can match the competition in Europe. Chelsea might have a never say die spirit but United has a winning spirit. The never say die can only Hold the winning for a while. UP UNITED and i hope we can lay hands on Berbatov this summer...The new Ruud Boy..!"
