West Brom boss Tony Mowbray will attempt to sign Manchester United striker Louis Saha on loan if he loses Kevin Phillips to Birmingham.
Veteran hitman Phillips, 34, is expected to turn down Albion's offer of a new one-year deal in favour of a two-year contract on offer from Blues.
And having cooled his interest in Newcastle's Shola Ameobi, Mowbray is believed to have turned his attention to United forward Saha.
The 29-year-old Frenchman has suffered an injury-plagued spell at Old Trafford, and is currently on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.
He is building his way back to full fitness, though, and Mowbray is hoping Sir Alex Ferguson will let him move to The Hawthorns on a season-long loan deal.
The Baggies boss has already recruited strikers Roman Bednar and Luke Moore on permanent deals this summer, but is keen to sign a forward with Premier League experience, and Saha fits the bill.

"Excellent!! This is the most exciting news of the summer since we won the title and the Champs League. We must take this opportunity and give them Saha even it means selling him for £8M or even a season-long loan would be ideal. It will get Saha off our payroll and release funds to sign a couple of top drawer strikers we have all been vying for all summer in the form - Santa Cruz and Jan Klass Huntlaar."

"no way... i think he'd rather go n play in france instead. no offence but this guys a winner, a top level player. WBA are probably looking more on the lines of marcus bent or mpenza."
