Southgate is targeting Toon midfielder Milner, 22, as a potential replacement for former Portsmouth star O'Neil, whose family have struggled to settle in the North East.

Newcastle boss Kevin Keegan would fight to keep hold of Milner, who made 29 appearances for the Magpies last season and netted two goals.

Southgate told The Sun: "We want to keep Gary and, ideally, we can get everything sorted out soon."

O'Neil, 24, joined Boro last summer in a £4million transfer from Pompey and Fulham and West Ham are reportedly interested in signing the player.

"obafemi, the way we did that is having an average attendence of 26k and 7 teams got lower amount. Remember 26k in a 35k will mean emtpy seats but not neccessarily the least amount"

"Selling Milner would be one of the biggest mistakes KK could make this Summer, and i don't think he's that daft. He's been one of, if not our best player the past 2 seasons (not including his spell out with injury obviously) and even if we did sell him £5 million is laughable."
