The Teesside-born midfielder is understood to want regular first-team football, something which manager Gareth Southgate cannot guarantee.

Now the interest in his services is mounting and a bid has been lodged, with Latics understood to be the team in question.

Southgate said: "We have had interest in Lee, along with a couple of our other young players.

"There has been a lot of loan interest in him and we have had a tentative offer, but that's as far as it has gone at this moment in time."

Southgate would like to keep Cattermole, but it is believed he will not stand in his way if he wants to leave the club.

"i want rid of him all together, he is trouble off the pitch and on it he does little anyway. All he does are sliding challenges, he cant pass, cant defend well, get forward or anything. He looked promising in 05/06 but since then what has he done? nothing except get banned from every pub in stockton"

"get him out the boro for a year, preferably to a manager who will b*llo*k him if he keeps behavin like a spolt brat and them get him back fresh and professional and like the next steven gerrard everyone thought he could be"
