Downing in a Stew over poor form

Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing has admitted that he needs to 'get more involved' after a frustrating start to the Premier League season.

The England wideman has only shown glimpses of his best form this term and has not been able to find any consistency.

He has yet to score and spoke to manager Gareth Southgate earlier this week about his performances.

Southgate gave Downing his backing and the 24-year-old now hopes to impress for the remainder of the campaign and grab his fair share of goals.

"I've got to get involved in the games more," Downing said in The Sun.

"Hopefully the lads can feed me the ball and then it's up to me.

"I've spoken to the manager and he's said it will come. The same happened last season and I ended up with 10 (goals), so it can happen again."
