The 23-year-old underwent surgery to repair the fourth cruciate ligament injury of his career in September with top London specialist Andy Williams performing the operation.

Having been given the news that he should return as strong as ever and play well into his thirties, Bates is now heading for Vermont to consult the man who guided Tiger Woods through his knee rehabilitation, physiotherapist Bill Knowles.

Bates said: "I asked the surgeon where he would recommend and he immediately said Bill. He's worked with Tiger Woods, Jonny Wilkinson and Lawrence Dallaglio.

"I thought it would be good to get away, get my head round things and crack on with it."
