Nobby nuts about new Toon arrival

Newcastle legend Nolberto Solano has tipped fellow South American Jonas Gutierrez to be a big hit in the Premier League next season.

The 33-year-old Peruvian can lay claim to the title of being one of the club's most successful imports over the last decade and certainly the most successful acquisition from South America.

In his two spells on Tyneside, he not only mastered the rigours of the English game, but established himself as a fans' favourite at St James' Park, and he believes Argentina international Jonas can do the same after joining this week.

Solano said: "I loved my time at Newcastle and wish Jonas all the best at his new club.

"He can be a big success there after playing in a strong league in Argentina and then again in La Liga in Spain.

"When Kenny Dalglish signed me I did not know too much English, but Newcastle is a great city - and once you are settled, it is up to you to do your job on the field and work as hard as you can for the fans.

"I liked it so much I played for Newcastle twice!

"It is always great to go back there because I have many, many friends in Newcastle."

The Magpies were delighted to have tied up their first summer signing after weeks of speculation, and were all the more pleased that they managed to sneak the 24-year-old in under the radar without their interest becoming known.

Real Mallorca have vowed to continue their fight for compensation from the player following his unilateral decision to terminate his contract, which has two years still to run.

However, Newcastle are confident Jonas is theirs and he will start work with his new team-mates when he returns from a short break to begin pre-season training later this month.

He is expected to make his debut in one of the prestigious friendly clashes with PSV Eindhoven and Valencia at St James' Park the beginning of August.

Manager Kevin Keegan will hope his arrival signals the start of a rush as executive director (football) Dennis Wise and vice-president (player recruitment) Tony Jimenez home in on their remaining targets with FC Basle striker Eren Derdiyok continuing to be linked to the Tyneside club.

Meanwhile, striker Andy Carroll has been ruled out of England's Under-19s European Championships finals campaign through injury.

Carroll is out of the tournament, which is due to start in the Czech Republic on July 14, with a heel problem.

He will instead be at his club's training ground as the rest of his team-mates return for pre-season training on Monday for a scan.

Keegan had expected to be without Carroll for the start of pre-season because of his international commitments, but now faces heading into the club's first friendly at Hartlepool on July 19 without he and Achilles victim Mark Viduka.

"Ingleby, you bitter smogmonster....How about you concentrate on your own team for once, you Smoggies always seem more interested in Newcastle. Anyway how can you have a go at us when to sign this Digard fella you're having to resort to getting him to slag his current club off instead of making a half decent bid!!!! Idiots."

"ingleby: I rather pay compensation then a larger transferfee. Guess he should have gone to you, but on the other hand rumours are going around that foreign players are afraid of playing for you, since your stadium is as crowded as a graveyard :S"
