Mike Ashley can win over Newcastle's beleaguered fans by appointing Alan Shearer as manager, according to former Magpies midfielder Rob Lee.
Lee expects his former England and Newcastle team-mate will one day take charge at St James' Park and has hinted Shearer would relish the task of reviving his hometown club.
"I can honestly say, yes, Alan Shearer will manage Newcastle," Lee told The Mag, Newcastle's leading fanzine.
"Until now I would have just said that he would one day but I finally believe that he would tomorrow if the job is how he wants it, without all the silly games going on that have killed it."
Magpies idol Shearer has long been considered a future manager of the club. However, with the club embroiled in crisis after crisis since his retirement from playing in 2006, the 38-year-old has repeatedly distanced himself from the role, preferring to remain in his position as a pundit on the BBC's Match of the Day.
Lee, however, believes Ashley, who put the club up for sale following the furore surrounding Kevin Keegan's resignation in September, could win over the fans by appointing Shearer as boss.
"Mike Ashley would solve a lot of his problems by appointing Alan and accepting that mistakes have been made," Lee added.
"Alan could be a priceless get out of jail card. Now is the time to make the club what we all want."
Lee, who spent 10 seasons playing for Newcastle, admitted he would consider returning alongside Shearer.
"Yes I would love to be part of it," he added.

"rob lee - one our greatest players and apparently one of big al's top mates. u would have thought he'd be well placed to make this statement but i just cannot see shearer coming back until we're rid of ashley and all of the crap thats at the club at the minute. if he did to be honest he'd be a bit stupid, and he's certainly not that. for me rob lee as assistant wud be quality unall, he was brilliant player, one of best of his generation for a few seasons and the pair of them have got enough nouse and charisma to do the job perfectly. just not yet i don't think. but in 5 yrs time then definately, i'd love to have them back!"

"if wise is there and shearer takes the job i will lose all respect for him.... i think shearer might be a good appointment though, but i fear ashley will only appoint a yes man"

"pretts (Coventry City fan), "What is it about the Toon fans - I think they like failure!!"
Why you wrote this?
Keegan was great at the first spell and we can not tell what the result would have been with the second coming. You have crystal ball or something?
And what are we Toon Army expecting? A step in the right direction towards stability and progress. Nothing more in this very moment. I can not see how that are big expectations. "

"What is it about the Toon fans - I think they like failure!! First the demand Keegan despite the fact he was one of the worst England managers ever and has the mental toughness of jelly. Now they hark for a guy who has the charisma of a loaf of bread and no managerial experience - oh and while making another huge mistake lets have Rob Lee just because he played there!!! Get real guys. Shearer is a legend to all English fans and Rob Lee was quality and a great man too. However what you need is some stability and a person of strength and experience. Is someone like Bruce not a better option? OK not a sexy name and there are higher profile managers out there but like Tottenham you sometimes you think you are bigger than you are and maybe need to focus your expectations at the right level."

"Shearer was quite vocal of his dissapproval over the Keegan Saga, so if did come back and Wise stayed then there's a lot about we didn't find out about."
