Pompey late with November wages

Portsmouth's players have for a second occasion not been paid on time but will receive a "proportion of their wages" on Friday.

The club issued a short statement on Thursday night confirming their squad had not received their November salaries on time.

A similar situation occurred two months ago when players were paid their September wages late.

The statement read: "Portsmouth FC can confirm that the majority of the first team squad have not yet received their November salaries.

"A proportion of their wages will be paid tomorrow (Friday) with the club's new owners working towards paying the remainder over the next few days."

Portsmouth's difficulties in making the payments are related to the changing ownership of the club.

The previous delay was attributed to administrative problems following the takeover by former owner Sulaiman Al Fahim.

That situation brought criticism of Al Fahim from the Fratton Park board and the club was subsequently sold again to Ali Al Faraj.

The latest developments will lead to further concern for the stability of the Premier League club.

Players' union chief Gordon Taylor has voiced his concern.

Taylor, chief executive of the Professional Footballers' Association, told Sky Sports News: "You can understand much better problems in the Football League and lower down.

"Chester City, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Watford - players have shown a great deal of solidarity and sympathy and understanding and deferred wages.

"But if that is happening in the Premier League I'm sure it is not good for the image of the game and if it is the case it is not going to be highly thought of at the headquarters of the Premier League either.

"There can't be any good reason in the Premier League with the money they enjoy from television income alone, never mind sponsorship.

"That is what life is about in football, paying wages of the players.

"I thought this had been solved with the change of ownership at the club a few weeks ago. We had this earlier in the season."

Portsmouth have endured a turbulent season on and off the field.

The south coast club are bottom of the Premier League with just seven points from 14 games and manager Paul Hart was sacked last week with Avram Grant taking over.

"PompeyMatty (Portsmouth fan) I understand where your comming from, however you need a new stadium. I love Pompey as much as Man City well just a bit less but if I knew the stadium was a house at the top and the bottom of it smashed down then put turnstiles there then another little house on the right is it the club shop? It's funny. tomsampson (Aston Villa fan) its harsh to take the mick out off the ground, but I also agree its funny becoz its worser than we thought. "

"I feel sorry for the fans, but this situation is beyond a joke. This is déjà vu, with Leeds and Southampton having followed the same path. Look where they are now..."

"Wow, they seems worst off then Newcastle last year. at least Fat Ashley didn't do that to the players. Looks like they are going the Leeds way. Down or Administration."

So its perhaps admirable when so called 'smaller clubs' are struggling, but when it happens to a prem club its not good for the image of the game ? I dont quite get it. Take a good look at the number of clubs with financial problems - the premiership and football league are simply not sustainable in the current format and someones gonna go under. Good luck to pompey and the 15-20 other teams in financial trouble."

"Pay up Pompey, Pompey pay up!"

DirtyScummer (Southampton fan)

"lanner - no disrespect, but two bitter rivals should be able to exchange words of hate and derision with one another, without a third party stepping in to moralise the situation. We all know we are daft, but for saints fans, this is the most hilarious piece of justice imaginable, seeing as how 6 months ago, when we were days from going out of existence altogether, the p*mpey fans couldn't get enough of wallowing in our despair. So, there is no chance of any sympathy from us. Any other club gets my sympathy, but these lot... whatever!"
