Sheffield United boss Kevin Blackwell is expected to step up his attempt to bring Lee Martin back to the club due to Keith Gillespie's injury.
Gillespie sustained a heavily sprained ankle in the friendly against Bury last month and is expected to miss the Blades' first five matches of the new season.
Blackwell told the Sheffield Star: "Keith has got a sprain, but it's a serious one.
"I would imagine that he'll be out for around five to six weeks. It could be sooner and hopefully it will be.
"Obviously we were worried that he'd done something a lot more serious so, in a sense, it's good news. But he'll still be out for sometime."
Manchester United winger Martin spent the final three months of last season on loan at Bramall Lane and Blackwell has enquired about the possibility of a return.
